Gastroenterology Care, From Assessment to Treatment

Digestive symptoms can have many possible causes.

A consultation allows your gastroenterologist to understand your symptoms and determine whether further investigations or treatment may be appropriate.

Diagnostic & Endoscopic Procedures

Investigating Digestive Symptoms

Depending on your symptoms, medical history and clinical assessment, your gastroenterologist may recommend an endoscopic procedure to examine the digestive tract more closely.

Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

A gastroscopy uses a thin, flexible scope to examine the esophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestine. It may be recommended when investigating symptoms such as persistent upper abdominal discomfort heartburn, swallowing difficulties or gastrointestinal bleeding.

Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy allows the doctor to examine the lining of the colon and rectum. It may be performed to investigate bowel symptoms or as part of colorectal cancer screening in appropriate patients. Polyps identified during the procedure may also be removed for further examination.

Video Capsule Endoscopy

Video capsule endoscopy uses a small capsule containing a camera to capture images as it travels through the digestive tract. It is particularly useful for examining areas of the small intestine that may be difficult to assess with conventional endoscopy.

Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)

Endoscopic ultrasound combines endoscopy with ultrasound imaging to provide detailed images of the digestive tract and nearby structures, including the pancreas and bile ducts. It may also be used to guide tissue sampling when clinically indicated.

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

ERCP is an endoscopic procedure used in the assessment and treatment of certain conditions affecting the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts, such as bile duct stones or narrowing of the ducts.

Colorectal Health

When Should You Consider Colorectal Cancer Screening?

Colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in Singapore.

Importantly, colorectal polyps and early colorectal cancer may not always cause noticeable symptoms.

For adults at average risk, colorectal cancer screening is generally recommended from age 50 in Singapore. People with certain risk factors – including a personal or family history of colorectal cancer or polyps may be advised to begin screening earlier.
