Preparing for Your Procedure

Proper preparation helps your procedure go smoothly and allows your doctor to carry out the examination effectively. The instructions you receive may vary depending on your procedure, medical conditions and medications.

Please follow the specific preparation instructions provided by our clinic. If you are unsure about any of the instructions, contact our team before your appointment.

Before Your Gastroscopy

Preparing for a Gastroscopy

A gastroscopy examines the upper digestive tract, including the oesophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestine.

Fasting

You will need to stop eating and drinking for a period of time before your gastroscopy so that your stomach is empty. Our clinic will advise you on when to begin fasting.

Medications

Let your doctor know about any medications or supplements you are taking, particularly blood-thinning medications and medicines for diabetes. You will be advised if any adjustments are needed before the procedure. Do not stop your regular medication unless instructed by your doctor.

Medical Conditions

Please inform us if you have any existing medical conditions, allergies or previous reactions to sedation or anaesthesia.

Arrange for Someone to Accompany You

Sedation may be given to help you stay comfortable during the procedure. If you receive sedation, you should arrange for someone to accompany you home and avoid driving, operating machinery or making important decisions for the rest of the day.

Before Your Colonoscopy

Preparing for a Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy examines the lining of the large intestine (colon and rectum). Good bowel preparation is important as it allows your doctor to clearly examine the bowel.

Dietary Preparation

You may be asked to adjust your diet in the days leading up to your colonoscopy. Closer to the procedure, you may need to follow a clear-fluid diet. Our clinic will provide instructions on what you can eat and drink.

Bowel Preparation

You will be prescribed a bowel preparation solution to empty and clean your bowel before the procedure. Follow the instructions carefully, including when and how to take the solution. Frequent bowel movements and diarrhoea are expected after taking the bowel preparation, so it is helpful to remain near a toilet.

Medications

Tell your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking, especially blood thinners, diabetes medications and iron supplements. Your doctor will advise if any need to be adjusted or temporarily stopped. Do not make changes to your medication without medical advice.

Arrange for Someone to Accompany You

If sedation is used for your colonoscopy, arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you home after the procedure. You should not drive, operate machinery or make important decisions for the rest of the day.
